The hourly rate is only half the math. The other half is how many hours the job takes, and that is where local conditions come in.
Travel Time and Bridge Crossings
Many local movers bill travel time. At The Other Moving Company, we bill local moves from the time the truck leaves our office until it returns. On the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula, that drive often includes the Coleman Bridge between Gloucester Point and Yorktown, or the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on I-64 for moves to the Southside. Rush hour traffic at either crossing adds billable time, so a midmorning start can cost less than one that hits peak traffic.
Minimum Hours
Most movers set a minimum, often 2 to 4 hours, even for a small job. Our minimum is 4 hours. If you are moving a single room or a storage unit, ask about the minimum before you book so the total is not a surprise.
Stairs, Long Carries, and Raised Homes
Fixr puts stair fees at $50 to $100 per staircase after the first and long carry fees at $75 to $125 for every extra 75 feet. Coastal towns like Poquoson have many raised homes with exterior staircases, and rural Gloucester and Mathews have long driveways. Count every step and measure the walk from the door to where a truck can park.
Packing
Professional packing adds $500 to $1,500 for most homes, according to Fixr. You can cut that by packing yourself and leaving only the kitchen and fragile items to our packing service.
Season and Day of the Week
Fixr says summer moves can cost 20 to 30 percent more. Hampton Roads summers also bring military PCS season, when base families compete for the same dates. Extra Space reports that Tuesday-to-Thursday moves can be 10 to 20 percent cheaper than weekend moves. A weekday in fall or winter is the easiest way to save.
Storage and Specialty Items
Pianos, gun safes, and pool tables carry their own charges. Storage also adds costs when your closing dates don’t line up. If you have a piano, see our guide to piano moving costs in Virginia.
